What are Lime Pops
Lime pops are a natural characteristic found in handmade ceramic tiles produced from unrefined clay. They appear as small craters or divots that form when naturally occurring particles of lime within the clay expand during or after firing.
Because they are created by the raw materials themselves, lime pops are considered an inherent feature of authentic artisan ceramics rather than a manufacturing defect.
What Causes Lime Pops
Natural clay contains trace amounts of calcium carbonate (lime). In handmade ceramics, the clay is intentionally left relatively unrefined, preserving its natural mineral composition and giving each tile its unique character.
During firing, these tiny lime particles undergo a chemical reaction. As they expand, they can occasionally push through the surface of the tile or glaze, leaving behind a small crater known as a lime pop.
Some lime pops develop while the tile is in the kiln, while others may appear in the days or weeks after firing as residual lime particles continue to react within the clay body.
This phenomenon is recognised throughout the handmade ceramic industry and is a natural result of working with genuine clay rather than highly processed industrial materials.
Artisan Handmade Tiles
Lime pops are commonly found in artisan ceramic tiles manufactured using traditional methods and natural clay bodies.

Every handmade tile is unique. Variations in colour, texture, glaze movement, edges and occasional lime pops are all part of what distinguishes artisan tiles from machine manufactured ceramics. Rather than striving for complete uniformity, handmade tiles celebrate the natural variation that comes from skilled craftsmanship and authentic raw materials.
The Tiles of Ezra Standard
While lime pops are a natural characteristic of artisan ceramics, our manufacturing process is designed to minimise their occurrence wherever possible.
Every Tiles of Ezra production batch rests for approximately two weeks before packaging.
This resting period allows any delayed lime pops to develop before the tiles undergo final quality control.
Our quality control team then carefully inspects every batch, removing tiles that do not meet the Tiles of Ezra Standard before they are packed and shipped.
This additional step significantly reduces the number of lime pops that reach our customers and reflects our commitment to producing some of the highest-quality handmade tiles available.
Design Considerations
When specifying handmade ceramic tiles, it is important to embrace the natural variation that makes each installation unique.
- Expect variation in colour, texture, surface movement and occasional lime pops across the installation.
- Ask your installer to evenly distribute tiles with more pronounced character throughout the space.
- Include a dry-lay in your installation quote so the overall blend can be reviewed before installation.
Installation Tips
If a cleaner aesthetic is preferred, there are several simple installation techniques that can be used.
- Order additional overage so tiles with more pronounced character can be selectively omitted.
- Many small lime pops can be naturally filled during the normal grouting process, allowing them to blend into the finished installation.
- Where a smoother finish is desired, a colour-matched epoxy filler such as Akemi can be used to fill individual lime pops.
- Reserve tiles with more visible character for cuts or concealed locations, such as beneath cabinetry or vanities.
